Feature- Pranayama Breathing

Pranayama is a Sanskrit word meaning "restraint of the prana or breath". The word is composed of two Sanskrit words, Prana, life force, or vital energy, particularly, the breath, and "ayama", to suspend or restrain.

Our Pranayama Breathing in Bikram Yoga is done through the throat using the nose (inhale) and mouth (exhale) as passageways. By breathing very slowly we expand the lung capacity, slowly calm down the central nervous system and promote circulation of oxygen throughout the body.

You must make sure not to close your eyes during the deep breathing. Closing your eyes will make you feel extra dizzy. You'll be dizzy enough with all that extra oxygen to the brain.

Pranayama breathing can be done anytime to give you energy, peace and clarity of mind. Make sure, at the end of every inhale, you stretch all the way up from your waist and push the oxygen into the lower chambers of the lungs.

In pranayama breathing we inhale through the nose, mouth closed for a slow count of six as we simultaneously lift our elbows up to the ceiling to allow for maximum expansion of the lungs and rib cage. Chin becomes exactly level to the floor at the end of the inhale. When you have inhaled completely and reached the count of six, push your head back with the help of the knuckles, mouth open exhaling all the stale breath to the same slow count of six. Simultaneously on the exhale slowly bring your arms and elbows together, first the palms, then the wrist, forearms and last elbows staying above the heart, stretching towards the mirror, feeling a stretch in the top of the shoulders.

  • Good for lungs and respiratory system
  • Helps with mental relaxation
  • Helps high blood pressure
  • Relieves irritability
  • Good for detoxification
  • Exercises nervous, respiratory and circulatory systems
It's all about the breathing for 90 minutes. Here we prepare for class. We warm up the lungs, calm the mind and find our focus and concentration. With that we make up our minds to work hard and stay present mentally and physically to get the maximum benefits of the class.
